We just got our first look inside the Jeep Recon, revealing all the key interior and exterior details destined for Jeep’s next EV.

Our latest photos of a Recon prototype testing on public roads in Michigan confirm that the exterior design stays true to the initial teaser images, and concepts that were shown at dealer meetings. Prototypes are running nearly disguise-free with only a minimal wrap covering the grille and D-pillars. Exposed hinges for the removal doors are on full display, as is just about everything else about the exterior styling. But until now, the interior design has remained a mystery.

Recon Interior Caught Largely Uncovered
We can now show you a completely uncovered dashboard, revealing a new steering wheel with a flat-top and flat-bottom design. The Recon’s large central infotainment screen is laid bare, showing a vertical strip of icons to control Media, Comfort, Navigation, Phone and other Vehicle settings. Below the generous landscape display are a range of other buttons for the HVAC settings, Heated & Cooled Seats, and the Heated Steering Wheel. These appear to be physical buttons embedded into the display surface, which should aid in their activation. A physical tune/scroll knob is in place at the bottom-right corner of the screen. Blue stitching, blue 4xe badging and matching blue metallic flourishes can be seen around the interior. A prominent grab bar is in place for the front seat passenger, adding a Wrangler-style off-road-minded detail for this very Wrangler-inspired EV.

Driving Modes
Jeep’s initial teaser shots included an aerial view looking straight down on the center tunnel between the front seats, showing a red panel just aft of the transmission selector. That detail is confirmed in these spy shots—and it appears to be the traction management interface, with which to tackle various terrains and road conditions. In addition to a design detail that looks like an Easter Egg for Jeep’s iconic seven-slot grille, we can see some evidence for 2 settings— "Rock" and "Mud"

Digital Display/Range Indicator
The Recon gets fully digital instrumentation, showing a prominent Range Display on the left, with the speedometer on the right. This prototype displays 147 miles of range, while the battery percentage appears to read 66% (with a corresponding battery bar that seems to match that value). Some quick math suggests a range of about 200 miles, but that is far below expectations, so we’re not making any predictions based on the instrumentation on this prototype. For comparison, the Jeep Wagoneer S EV is claiming a range of “over 300 miles.” Although the brick-like Recon looks far less than the slippery Wagoneer S (with its impressive .29 coefficient of drag) it’s hard to imagine the Recon trailing so far behind, from a range standpoint.

It kind of looks like the main screen has a space behind it. Like it extends out a bit.

I’ve never been a fan of floating screens and prefer when it’s integrated in the console. That said, from what we can see if the interior, it seems well put together. The range we see at 66% is probably something that will be fixed with software updates. I’m excited.

It is crazy what manufacturers are doing with screens now.

It’s a shame that Jeep did such a poor job on the interior design as it pertains to usability.
Auto manufacturers want to use touch screens to control everything because it’s cheaper. Vehicle design went in that direction for a decade.
The best manufacturers listened to customer feedback (touchscreens are a terrible idea in a moving car, especially an off road vehicle) and started bringing back physical buttons. I see Jeep still hasn’t figured it out.
I’m wondering if improvements will have to wait until Stellantis sells the brand.
