Thanks for all the replies. I asked because a dealer told me their reservation process involves a non-refundable deposit and you must fill out a credit application, and provide a few identity verification things. I wanted to see if that was typical. Sounds like that is beyond what most dealers do.

I tried several times to give them a deposit. They said don’t worry about it, the truck is yours when it comes in. kinda scary but I’m getting it tomorrow. I bought a PRO from them last year. Perhaps no deposit because I was a good customer?

2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD ORP
I found my TRD ORP on the Toyota site as an allocation at my local dealership (PA) in January. Hauled over to the dealership in question with the VIN in hand, and put $500 (refundable) down to reserve it. That money was folded into my eventual purchase of the car in late March.

Also spoke to a dealer in NY back in December, as well, trying to better my odds of finding a 4Runner fast; they wanted $1000 down (also refundable). When I told them my local dealership only wanted $500, the NY ppl honored that and said they’d accept $500, as well.

As said by a few ppl here, seems to be a dealership by dealership deal.

Best of luck!

That's all BS man. Look around for a reputable place and you won't have to do all of that.

(My question refers to US dealerships) What all did you have to fill out and/or sign when you reserved your 4runner? I think this might vary by dealer (and possibly by state) but I'm not sure.

How much was your deposit and is it refundable?

Were you forced to accept use of Toyota financing and fill out a loan application?

Was there a signed agreement on out-the-door price?
Hello, I initially contacted several dealerships in 3 states around me (WA, OR, ID) and simply stated that I wanted to be added to a waitlist for the specific 4Runner I wanted (TRD PRO in Black). I think being specific narrowed down who was willing to speak with me because that model is going to be very hard to get. I had a few get back with me all with pretty much the same offer - $500-$1000 (100% refundable) deposit to even go on a waitlist. Like the other comment made, there is no financing in play because rates will definitely change and unfortunately, because most dealers only honor a quote for 30 days, who knows what the final price will be especially now with the tariffs going into place. I only chose 1 dealer to pay the deposit to and get on the list (in #2 spot). The reason (for this particular dealer) was that they have an agreement with another large dealer in the same state and so if the other dealer happens to rec'v my choice of vehicle, the sales guy said they could do a trade from their store. Guess I view that as getting in line at the top with 2 dealers and only having to pay one the deposit. Anyway, hope this helps in some way. Good luck.

I put down a $1000 deposit on a Limited trim with no date or idea of delivery. I keep checking on the inventory page from the Toyota site for the exact model with the options that I want, and I noticed some dealerships are charging for things that come standard on the Limited trim. Is that normal or more games that dealerships are playing?

$500 down to secure spot on ORP waiting list. Passed on 2, 3 is gonna be it! 🤞fully refundable, just to confirm I was serious. $1 below MSRP. Had them remove all the “port installed options” no hassles.

Looking for my first Toyota 4Runner
Every dealership I contacted had a $500-1000 refundable deposit. When I reached out about a allocated 4Runner I saw on Toyota's inventory page, I would give them the zip code of where I'll register the car and ask for the OTD price (TSRP+Taxes/Title/Fees). I made sure they provided that on paper and not just verbally or a text message. It had to be on a form with a Toyota letterhead with the costs broken down. If I was able to negotiate the selling price, I'd get this proposal revised with the agreed numbers. If I liked the number, I went ahead and sent a deposit and got a receipt for it. None asked me to sign the proposal for the price discussed.

Every dealership I talked to did not require me to use Toyota Financing, but was able to provide a rough estimate if I chose to go that route. This does not require a credit check. I did have my own financing and dealerships offered to try and match it, but were unable to.
