If you look up Rivians Stance on Gas. Theya re firmly against it. Most likely this is to help Scout out with Zonal Architecture and Software for the Harvesterz
Rivian is also in business to make money. That stance could easily change in the future when they see the demand from consumers for a generator option. Being against petroleum powered vehicles does not necessarily indicate a firm stance against packing around a generator for use when access to the electrical grid is not available.

RJ Has stated numerous times that he will see the end of Gas engines in his life time.

Why would his company delay the inevitable?

I'm not saying it isn't possible but it is very very unlikely.

Trivia:
Early on Musk was selling EV Motors and other trinkets to German EV MFGs.
Helped with early cash flow.

Hence the "Cooling delete kits" for those vehicles and Tesla motors today.
Bad seals.

Rumor in the Tesla forums Musk may license FSD to other MFG's.

A 3500 Dually Pick up, generator topping off plug-in batteries with 1500 Ft lbs of torque,, even the worst of truck owning EV skeptics would be impressed.

People have range and charging anxiety. While I can agree with Rivian that full electric is the future for most consumer vehicles (my reservation is for an EV) - that future has to deal with these anxieties first. For a lot of people, you are either going to have to force them into EV's crying and screaming, or ease them in with an EREV. Once they are in an EREV, they see what an EV can do, and be far more ready for the next step when it comes. EREV's will speed up adoption in the long run - and that long run will be a LOT quicker.

Think of it this way, current households have 2 cars. Some might be willing to do one ICE and one EV. IF they have 2 ICE now, they will be a lot quicker to go 1 ICE and 1 EREV - and then when the second car needs replacing, it will be an EV. The EREV will quickly go from the everyday vehicle to the short and long range vehicle, to only the short range vehicle (as they realize they can do the long range cheaper without serious charging issues. Meanwhile, once they have both the EV and EREV, they will literally HATE the maintenance of the generator.

Honestly, the only real place I see EREV's in 10 years is towing. EV tech has a long ways to go before it is really ready for long range towing. Even with better batteries, towing takes a ton of energy and towing makes accessing chargers a much larger annoyance. Forcing someone to charge 2-3 times more often while towing, while we have literally -0- infrastructure for pull through charging is a hard sell.

Hoping the IONNA system functions the same and is as simple and as reliable as Teslas and plenty of them and plenty of 350 KW's.

I’ve heard some really positive things about about Ionna mainly that the company that builds their chargers are the same company that builds all the German car manufacturers Charging stations in Europe.

And with the EV infrastructure funding on pause while its being reworked. Its Ionna time to shine.

It’s not like Rivian has never heard of erev technology before. If they were really thinking about it, they could have started anytime. No need to pilfer tech off Scout. Doubt they’ll ever add gas to a Rivian though as it’s completely off brand and would be a huge distraction for them as they focus on more affordable models where erev tech would even make less sense.

Something I've noticed over the years:

Guys are all over and into it when charging their EV's.
We like doing it.
A gaggle forms at the chargers.

Like drunks in a bar we make friends easy, the enthusiastic conversations, takes and questions and answers fly at the EV chargers.

To girls charging their EV is a chore, work like washing their waist-length hair.

Swiss born Wife and her GF's rolled through Switzerland and Germany in a rented Taycan on a ski trip.

They loved the charging stations, especially compared to Electrify America Charging frustrations in the USA.
On top of that many were pull-thru slots with restrooms and a slop chute serving sandwiches.

Good chargers aside, the Taycan inhales Electrons Like Snoop inhaling a big blunt. A charging monster.
Hope the Scout is the same.

Auto makers have been swapping parts, technology, even chassis forever.

Rivian developing the software gains them experience and cash. VW may even offer them future access to the VW parts bin in exchange. That will save them money on the fiddly bits that no one notices like seat adjusters and hood latches.

99lb daughter took the EV6 to Las Vegas to visit Grandma Axhandle at the fossilized old folks home.

Grandma was reaching down to pick up a ping pong ball, lost her balance and did a shoulder roll and broke a bone in her back.

26F in the snow (yeah it snows in 'Vegas) Daughter wrestling with the frozen Elect America J1772 CCS cable was a rough go. Brutal cable even in warm weather much less frozen.
Maybe lost a few pounds in the activity.

Talk at the EV shows is lighter, more flexible & dependable cables are coming.
