I am expecting to get my first 4runner, an ORP in the next 2 weeks. I am curious about the headlights it is coming with. The head light housing spec has 2 bulbs for limited, platinum, TRD pro and Trail hunter trims. All others get a single bulb set up. Is this something where Toyota cheaped out?
Is one bulb for both high and low beam good enough? Or am I missing something here.

My wife’s RAV4 is a projector style LED like the non premium 4Runner lights. Those headlights are phenomenal in my opinion. The high beams don’t get brighter, the pattern just changes to throw the light further down the road. I’m assuming more diodes just turn on within the housing.

On the single LED projector there is a shutter that blocks the light for the low beams. When you switch to high beams the shutter moves out of the way and you get the full spread of the projector's light.

I have a TRD ORP and the headlights have been perfect absolutely no issues for nighttime driving. The fog lights are also really bright.

If you look close at the single projector headlight you can see that Toyota has ingeniously designed a projector that is used in multiple models. Although the headlight housings are vastly different the actual projector is the same. The Camry, Corolla, Prius, Rav4, and Highlander all use the same projectors. It wouldn't surprise me if the single projector in the 4Runner didn't utilize the same one as the others. Also the fog lights are the same ones used in the Tundra, Sequoia and Tacoma.

Some may call it cost cutting but I think it's a great business tactic; design one really great headlight and put it in everything. You get an expensive premium headlight but due to economies of scale a lower production cost.

I had seen that on my friends 2018 GMC Sierra, but you could hear the shutters move and sorta see the shutter slide in the beam pattern. This seems like other diodes illuminating as it’s pretty instant. I just haven’t heard the shutters move, but I also haven’t stood outside the vehicle and hit the brights.

I’ve been googling for a teardown and looking at the parts diagram on Toyotas parts website. No conclusions yet.

You are correct, it’s a shutter. Tested it today on the RAV4.
